In Season Now: Niagara Peaches

Alice Waters famously served a single unadorned peach to U.S. President Bill Clinton on the conviction that perfection cannot be improved upon. The stone fruit that hails the height of summer is (like everything else) early this year, and Niagara locals say the last of the peaches will be gone by the beginning of August. Enjoy them now, while they last. | Culinarium, Ontario's Locavore Store, (and a Certified Good Food Fighter) sponsors GFR's weekly seasonal produce report.

Cider Under $15
The Ciderie St. Nicholas, Southeast of Quebec City, has been "exporting" their innovative artisanal ciders to Ontario for a few years, but the Pom'Or Tradition (Non-Vintage, $12.95, LCBO# 179473) is getting rave reviews for its crisp, dry refreshing taste... it tastes like, um, apples! (Maybe more like green ones.) It has a lovely fine mousse and carries a light alcohol by volume at just 7%. When it's very hot, it's tempting to drink quickly from a cold glass of wine, so The Pom d'Or is a lovely aperitif and start to an evening, or as a dessert wine to end of a long Sunday lunch.

In Season Now: Peas

Could there be anything better suited to the spirit of this great dominion than shelling peas this Canada Day week? Kathleen Mackintosh reports the first (Upper) Canadian peas in the pod have come in from the fields. Mackintosh adds that some farmers, like her supplier Alvin Gingras, are also shelling their peas before delivery... sounds convenient... but GFR is not sure we altogether approve. Why should farmers have all the fun? | Culinarium, Ontario's Locavore Store, sponsors GFR's weekly seasonal produce report.
