Summer Wine Under $20
Oscarr Farinetti was recently in town to promote his Piedmontese winery, the famous Fontanafredda, birthplace of Barolo. Indeed, Fontanafredda is now selling 500ml bottles of their flagship Barolo for $26 at Vintages, but next to the fancy stuff on the shelf is their 2008 Bricctonto Barbera (LCBO# 72348) in a regular sized 750 ml bottle for just $16.95. Barbera is Piedmont's everyday wine, and this light, cherry-noted, slightly tart wine is as food friendly (and pairing versatile) as it gets - perfetto for a grillo misto, or a lemon and garlic marinated barbecue chicken. It could be served ever-so-slightly chilled. Perhaps it's worthy of a new marketing category: the patio red. - Malcolm Jolley
