In Season Now: Rhubarb
"I know they're not really fruit, but everyone treats them as one anyway," says locavoriste Kathleen Mackintosh of rhubarb, which qualifies as the season's first Ontario dessert crop any way you slice it. Look for rhubarb in the just opening farmers markets or specialty stores - or check your backyard - rhubarb was widely planted (and spread) all over Southern Ontario in the 19th and 20th Centuries | Culinarium, Ontario's Locavore Store, sponsors GFR's weekly seasonal produce report.

Zoltan's Picks: An Under $15 Stunner and Five 5 out of 5's
Zoltan Szabo picks the 2007 Los Ailos Syrah Malbec (LCBO# 161406), which at $12.95 offers supererior value from the Valle del Tulum in Argentina. Zoltan notes the wine has: "Aromas of black berries, plums, toasted oak, vanilla and spicy nuances in the background. Medium to full-weight with integrated tannins and a smooth, warm finish. Try with spicy Hungarian sausages or Indian - spiced roasted and well sauced elk" Click here to find a bottle at an LCBO Vintages store near you. Szabo also gives GFR a additional five tasting notes on Outstanding Wines Recently Tasted, including a stunning 'five apple' second wine from Margaux, a Montepulciano d'Abruzzo that sublimely shatters stereotypes about the DOCG, a sparkler from the Marche, a top Alsatian Gewurtz and new Niagara Pinot Noir.
