In Season Now: Green Garlic
"Garlic," explains locavoriste Kathleen Mackintosh, "it's the perfect example of a seasonal food in different forms - green garlic in spring, scapes in early summer, blubs in late fall that hold us over until about February then we move into pickled or preserved garlic for a few months until spring is upon us again." The green shoots are simply young garlic plants that haven't yet developed into bulbs and cloves. Mackintosh expects to stock the first Ontario green garlic by next week.| Culinarium, Ontario's Locavore Store, sponsors GFR's weekly seasonal produce report.

Cool Climate Chardonnay
Niagara biodynamic pioneer Bill Redelmeier decided it was time for Ontario wines to make their mark on the world stage and win some recognition for talented winemakers in Niagara and PEC, so he helped organize the Seriously Cool Chardonnay tasting next month at Canada House in London. One wine that Jancis Robinson might taste there is the 2008 Southbrook Triomphe Chardonnay (LCBO# 172338 - $21.95). Winemaker Anne Sperling has made a quintessential Niagara Chardonnay, balancing the sweetening effects of oak with minerality and apple tartness. At 12.5% alcohol by volume, a glass or two at lunch ought to be easily metabolized, begging the question: will this be the first picnic/BBQ/patio wine of the season?

Wine Under $20
The properties that constitute a grown-up wine are slippery, but Domaine de L'Idylle's 2008 L'Altesse (LCBO# 61630 - $16.95)displays many of them: a lovely dandelion bitterness, offset by lemony tartness and an undertone honeysuckle nectar sweetness darting on and off of the palate the whole time. And maybe it's the romance of springtime, but the florals in the nose have a Julie Andrews meadow brightness that seems to evoke the near French Alpine location of the AOC: Savoie. - Malcolm Jolley

Pink Bubbles Under $20
Pink is not just for Easter bunnies and eggs. Grown-ups may also toast the springtime holidays with a little rosé rejuvenation with a glass of the Cordoníu Pinot Noir Rosé Brut ($16.95 - LCBO# 665372). Bright red berry flavours burst through at first, then a crisp, fizzy slightly peppery finish. A wonderful aperitif, it could just as easily pair to a baked ham. Or a refreshment to bolster the stamina required to hunt eggs. At well under $20, this is a fantastic bargain. Unfortunately, at press, the LCBO could not disclose which Vintages stores will carry - it is not released until April 3rd. Click here on the 3rd to find a bottle near you. - Malcolm Jolley
In Season Soon: Ramp Alert?
The unseasonably warm spring weather has Ontario foodies dreaming of the edible first shoots of green: ramps or wild leeks. Not so fast, warns locavorista Kathleen Mackintosh, who reports foragers like Michael Forbes don't expect the first ramps until later in the month, or even May. Still, we can dream and check the bottom of maple stands, just in case. | Culinarium is Ontario's Locavore Store, generously sponsors GFR'sweekly seasonal produce report.
