Wine Under $15
It may not be advisable, but I think it is at least possible to describe an Italian label as a perfect bistro wine. The 2008 Via Collina Dolcetto di Diano d'Alba ($14.95 - LCBO# 159459) from Piedmont combines a lively cherry fruit-forwardness with a peppery kick that begs for quick, simple, pan fried dinners like calf's liver and onions or even a Bavette - although pizza or simple pastas would also do nicely. Click here to find the Via Collina at an LCBO near you.

In Season Now: Sweet Swedes

We must thank our Scandanavian friends for more than just self-assemble furniture and boxy-but-safe cars: so taken were 16C Viking descendants with the rutabaga, that in Europe this turnip cousin is known as a "Swede". Whatever they are called, rutabagas can be harvested well into winter (or kept long into it as well) and their sweet yellow flesh is particularly good at absorbing sauces and gravy when mashed, or simply roasted in olive oil with salt and pepper.

Wine Under $20
Chateau St-Jean (pronounced "gene") made its name in the late 1970s and early 80s with Sonoma Valley Chardonnay. Winemaker Margot Van Staaveren is on her 30th vintage at the iconic winery, and while she still makes rich creamy Chards, the house is also cultivating a reputation for Bordeaux-inspired reds like the 2006 Chateau St-Jean California Merlot ($19.95 - LCBO# 25304). This blend of wines across Northern California regions packs a bit of a wallop at 14% alcohol, but it's well balanced (with just a touch of tannin) and has wonderfully concentrated red fruit and plum notes with enough acidity to bring a little water to the mouth. Great for Friday night steak, or Sunday evening roasts. - Malcolm Jolley

Wine Under $20
The hot dry summer of 2006 blessed all the growths of Bordeaux, and wines from modest regions like Chateau Saint-Nicolas ($18.95 - LCBO# 138602) from the Premières Côtes de Bordeaux seems to echo the bright sunshine that helped coax its deep red fruit notes. Made mostly from Merlot, this a great wine to serve those who retain a Sideways-era bigotry against the great grape. There is a touch of tannic firmness and pleasing zing of acid in the St. Nicolas that makes it an ideal pairing for roast chicken.
