Wine Under $20
2006 Bodegas Palacios Remondo "Montesa" Crianza
The nose leads to raisened dried fruit, but the wine is in no way dried out. Oak is apparent but by no means dominative. The palate is solid, smooth  and substantial, with structure underpinning the fruit at all times. A very well-crafted Crianza Rioja. A very surprising finish for its relatively modest price. A real steal actually. (LCBO# 674572, $19.95)  - Jamie Drummond

100% Niagara Grape Juice

Kathleen Mackintosh calls it "the best grape juice I’ve ever had, not too sweet, nice and grapy," and she suggests it's "a great festive bevvy for the kids at your table or the big kids who are avoiding the festive cheers." Gesundeit grape juice is made from the same vinifera varietals as Niagara wines including Vidal and Baco Noir. | Culinarium, Ontario's Locavore Store, sponsors GFR's weekly seasonal produce report.

Wine Under $20: Penfolds Thos. Hyland Chardonnay

Adelaide-based Penfolds call itself the world's largest boutique winery, and makes wine along an impressive range from the iconic Grange to the every day Koonunga Hill  (see Jamie Drummond's interview with chief winemaker Peter Gago  here.) Penfolds Thomas Hyland Chardonnay 2007 (LCBO# 611228 - $19.95) is a great example of a food friendly white wine. On the nose there are floral, citrus and apple notes with a hint of butter. And it's more retrained on the palate than many Aussie Chards: quite light with citrus/lime flavours. Well made. Click here to find a bottle in an LCBO store near you. - Anne Martin

From one of Spain's royal families of winemaking, the 2008 La Vendimia Rioja ($15.95 - LCBO# 674564) is a sunshine-filled, rich and fruity stunner at just over $15. Bold raspberry and blackcurrant notes meld with a garrigue-like spiciness. Open a good hour before serving and swish in a big glass or decant for optimum sipping and chase away dull December days.
