Pine Mushrooms The Japanese call them Matsutake
and prize pine mushrooms above all others. Kathleen Mackintosh
reports super-forager Jonathan Forbes has found the elusive
funghi in the James Bay lowlands - or, rather, the Cree natives have.
The find is significant, since the rare mushroom type is more commonly

Campo de
ViejoThe 2004 Campo Viejo Reserva ($18.45, LCBO#137810) is both a bargain and wonderfully understated Rioja at balanced 12% alcohol by volume. Although it's a big brand, and is part of the LCBO's "General List", it's made the same way it was 50 years ago. A perfect match for red meat of any kind, the wine is as easy to find as to drink. |
The
One and OnlyGFR's Lorette C. Luzajic ventures out for brunch at "The Only" on the Danforth. There she settles into a comfy couch, orders a Bloody Mary and muses on the meal and its soundtrack. More>> |
Lady
BurgerFuss Cooper developed "Indian Motorcycle" first as line of clothing, then as a restaurant that became so popular, the started making the bikes. Cooper has resurfaced on the Toronto restaurant scene with a financial district gourmet burger joint he's calling "Original Motorcycle Gourmet Burgers Etc." , the etcetera chiefly being dry rubbed, spicy chicken wings. Cooper uses "steak meat" instead of chuck (he won't divulge the cut, except to say it's fatty enough to make a juicy and tender burger). But separates him from all other burgers is his mini-4 ounce version he is marketing to weight conscious. "It's a big hit with the ladies," he reported happily. |

This Truck Kills Hunger Second Harvest is the execution of a really good idea: that perfectly good food that would otherwise be thrown away be given, instead, to the agencies that feed the hungry. But, as Malcolm Jolley found out when he did the rounds with food rescuer Blayne Walker it's not always easy. More>> Best
